Bees Play Hamburglar, Steal Game From Bucks

LAREDO, TX- The Laredo Bucks of the Central Hockey League fell to the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees 5-4 in the McDonald's Kid's Day Game Tuesday afternoon, in front of 5,127 fans at the Laredo Entertainment Center. The Bucks and the Texas Brahmas both lost Tuesday, leaving Laredo 10 points behind Texas in the Southeast Division. The Bucks fall to 26-16-4 (56pts) this season.

Jesse Bennefield scored his second goal of the game on a breakway past Andrew Martin with 9:28 left in the third period.

The Bucks trailed 4-1 late in the second period, and battled back to tie the game at four with 10:45 left in the game.

With Laredo trailing 4-2, Ryan Salvis got behind the Bees defense and scored on a breakway past Christian Boucher. The goal was Salvis' 10th of the season.

The Bucks tied the game at 4-4 with 10:45 left in the game, when Matt Miller scored his first goal of the night by sending a shot from the slot past Boucher. Miller has eight goals on the season.

Laredo pulled Martin for the final minute of the game to try and tie it, but the Bees defense hung on for the win. The Bucks are 12-6-4 in one-goal games this season.

The Killer Bees won in the regular season at the LEC for the first time since November 28, 2006. Rio is 1-15-2 in their last 18 regular season trips to Laredo.

Rio now moves just four points back of Laredo in the standings, as they improve to 24-19-4 (52pts).

The Killer Bees struck first 8:53 into the game as Jesse Bennefield picked up a loose puck right in front of the Bucks net, and scooped it past Andrew Martin from the right crease. The goal was Bennefield's 26th of the season.

The Bucks (19-6-1 at home) tied the game up 11:21 into the first, when Erick Lizon took the puck from behind the Bees net and sent a backhander from the slot past Christian Boucher. The goal was Lizon's fifth of the season, with Josh Bonar and Jason Dixon picking up the assists. Bonar's assist came in his first game with the Bucks, and his first against his former team the Killer Bees.

Rio's Ryan Shmyr scored to give the Bees a 2-1 lead as he picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone and knocked a backhander past Martin. It was Shmyr's fourth goal of the season.

Laredo outshot Rio 17-7 in the first period.

Rio would take a 3-1 lead 8:11 into the second, when Grant Goeckner-Zellar knocked in a rebound at the right side of the crease past Martin. The goal was Goekner-Zellar's 14th of the season.

The Killer Bees increased their lead to 4-1 as they Topher Scott scored a short-handed goal off of a Bucks turnover. The goal was Scott's third of the season.

The Bucks would cut the Bees lead to 4-2 when they struck on the power-play with 2:14 left in the second. Brent Cullaton sent a slap shot from the point past Boucher. The goal was Cullaton's first goal since re-joining the Bucks last week.

Each team put up 11 shots in the second period.

Laredo outshot Rio in the game 36-23.

Martin stopped 18 of 23 shots in net for the Bucks, while Boucher set aside 32 of 26 Laredo attempts.

The Bucks fall to 9-2 all-time in Kid's Day Games.

The Bucks will start a season-high five-game road trip this weekend, when they play two games at the New Mexico Scorpions.

Laredo will not return home to the LEC until Februarhy 26th when they host Arizona on the final Big Buck Thirsty Thursday. Call 718-BUCK (2825).
