Louisiana IceGators News Release
Lafayette, LA â The Louisiana IceGators suffered a 3-1 loss to the Mississippi Sea Wolves tonight at the Cajundome. The IceGators are 46-17-2 and still lead the Central Division with 94 points in the ECHL standings. The Sea Wolves (38-19-7) are in second place in the Central Division with 83 points.
Despite pounding Sea Wolf Greg Gardner with 18 shots, the Gators were unable to solve Mississippi's goaltender in the first period. The Sea Wolves were able to get one past Gator Frederic Cloutier. On a feed from Brent Gauvreau, Steffon Walby put a soft shot on Cloutier that the netminder spat back out. Walby corralled his own rebound and put it away for his 29th goal of the year.
The IceGators pummeled Gardner with 16 shots in the second period and were finally able to put one into the net half way through the second period. The Gators attacked Gardner's net and put several shots on goal, only to have them all turned away.
Jamie Johnson collected the puck off a rebound of a Konstantin Kalmikov shot and cleared the puck up to Josh Mizerek at the blue line. Mizerek blasted the puck toward the net and beat Gardner stick-side for his third goal of the year.
The Sea Wolves broke the tie at the 8:11 mark of the third period, on a goal by Brent Gauvreau. Steffon Walby added an empty net goal at 19:38 and put the game out of reach for the IceGators.
The Gators did not lack opportunities through the first and second periods, as they put a combined total of 34 shots on Gardner through 40 minutes of play. The Sea Wolves held the Gators to just three shots in the final frame, while barraging Cloutier with 18 shots in the last 20 minutes.
The IceGators welcome the Pensacola Ice Pilots to the Cajundome tomorrow night for Boy Scout Night. All Boy Scouts in uniform will receive a commemorative patch. After traveling to Biloxi on Friday, March 26 for a rematch with the Sea Wolves, the Gators will come back to the Frozen Swamp for Pack The Dome Night on March 27. If the Cajundome sells out for the game against the Gwinnett Gladiators, beer and soda will be 25 cents during the game.
