Alaska Aces News Release
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. â David Brumby recorded 46 saves in regulation and overtime, then shut Alaska down in the shootout as South Carolina rallied on three separate occasions to emerge with a 4-3 decision Friday in front of 5,636 at the North Charleston Coliseum.
Unlike the first two games of this Eastern swing, Alaska jumped out to a 1-0 lead only 3:14 into the first period, as Charles Linglet banged in a rebound for his 17th goal of the year. South Carolina tied the game on the power play with 6:47 remaining in the period when Ed Courtenay zipped a rinkwide pass to Curtis Huppe, who beat Aces starter Lance Mayes with a wrist shot. Huppe scored two third period goals to snap a 1-1 tie and lift the Stingrays to a 4-1 victory over Alaska Tuesday.
The Aces, however, stormed back in the second period, peppering South Carolina starter David Brumby with 23 shots and regaining the lead on Jordan Cameron's 14th goal of the season at 5:34. Alaska outshot the âRays 34-15 over the first 40 minutes and 49-31 for the game.
South Carolina wasted little time in tying the game 2-2, as Marty Clapton snapped a wrister past Mayes from between the circles at 2:42 of the third period. Alaska's power play, mired in a 3-for-57 slump and ranked 28th in the league, came through in the clutch with 6:28 left in regulation when Cameron scored his second of the night on a rebound. But just 39 seconds later, Jeff Boulanger jammed the puck just inside the post from in close for the equalizer to force overtime.
Neither team scored in OT, and Courtney's goal in the third round of the ensuing shootout proved to be the only one for either side, as David Brumby stopped all five Alaska shooters to give South Carolina the extra point. The game marked the first time since February 16th that the Aces earned points in back-to-back games. Alaska clinched a playoff spot Wednesday and moved to 33-26-5, one win away from its first winning season since 1998-99.
The Aces head to Charlotte tomorrow for a 3:30 p.m. AST start against the Checkers in a game that returns to Alaska's flagship station, KFQD 750 AM, as well as www.alaskaaces.com, with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Sunday's match-up with Greenville also will be broadcast live on KFQD at 11:00 a.m. AST. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.
