Niagara IceDogs News Release

The Niagara IceDogs completed a 4-2 victory over the Sudbury Wolves in what proved to be a suspensful divisional match-up in front of a sold out crowd at the Gatorade Garden City Complex Saturday night.

The first period was scoreless; both teams had power play opportunities and quality scoring chances, but both goalies played exceptionally well. The shots were 13-12 in Sudbury's favour after one period of play.

The IceDogs opened the scoring at the 8:03 mark of the second period, as Reggie Traccitto wristed a beautiful shot over the glove hand of Wolves goaltender Andrew Loverock after taking a perfect pass from Ryan Strome. Andrew Fritsch began the play with some solid grinding in the corners, and Andrew Shaw created the traffic in front of the net to give Traccitto the shooting lane - 1-0 Niagara.

Johnson Andrews gave the crowd quite the show in what was possibly his best fight of the season against Sudbury's Kyle Tarini. Andrews landed a few solid blows before taking Tarini down and saluting the fans.

Unfortunately the Wolves bit next, as Jared Staal put one past Mark Visentin at the 11:02 mark to tie the game 1-1.

The action would not quit in the second, as Matt Baldassarra took on the much bigger 6.05, 222-pounder Kain Allicock right in front of the Dogs' bench to get the boys going once again.

The Dogs acknowledged both Andrews' and Baldassarra's efforts, and regained the lead in the dying minutes of the second period. Alex Friesen carried the puck up the ice and made a nifty drop pass to Matt Petgrave, who made no mistake and one-timed the puck past Loverock to give Niagara a 2-1 lead going into the second intermission.

The third period was scoreless until Sudbury's John McFarland took a hooking penalty at the 11:44 mark, allowing power play juggernaut Reggie Traccitto to capitalize with his second marker of the night (18th of the season) to give the Dogs a 3-1 lead.

The Wolves answered back at the 15:19 mark of the period, also on the power play, as Ben Chiarot netted one over the shoulder of Visentin to give the game a score of 3-2.

Andrew Shaw sealed the deal for Niagara by putting the puck into the empty net, making the score 4-2 in favour of the Dogs - an important win for the IceDogs as they pass Sudbury in the Eastern Conference Standings.

The IceDogs return to action Sunday at 2:00 p.m. as they visit the Brampton Battalion in the final game of their home-and-home weekend.
