Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release

Peterborough, ON- The Peterborough Petes snapped a ten-game losing streak by cruising past the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors, 5-1 tonight at the Peterborough Memorial Centre. The Majors record now slips to 40-18-4-2 on the season.

The game was full of penalties and rough play in what could be a potential first round playoff match-up. The Petes began and ended the affair with a solid performance to halt their free fall in the conference standings. The Majors did improve their play in the second period and got back into the game but two Peterborough goals in the third period ended any hopes of a comeback for the Double Blue.

Austin Watson got things started for the Petes just over five minutes into the game to make it 1-0 for the home side. Watson re-directed Adam Sedlak's point shot past Majors goaltender Chris Carrozzi. Just over six minutes later the Petes increased the lead by two. Pat Daley escaped a check and cut through the Majors defence, skating to the front of the goal and beat Carrozzi high glove side to make it 2-0. The Majors went on the power play firing several shots on Andrew D'Agostini. The Petes netminder turned away all opportunities and as the penalty expired, Jeff Braitwaite hit Mike Lomis with a pass sending Lomis on a break away. Lomis beat Carrozzi to make it 3-0 for Peterborough after one.

The Majors began the second period with a much better effort and managed to grab a power play goal at 11:23 to cut the lead to two. Jordan Mayer parked himself in-front of goal and beat D'Agostini after crisp passing from Devante Smith-Pelly and Casey Cizikas. The Majors head into the intermission down by two. However, that's as close as they would get in this one. Austin Watson scored his second goal of the game just over a minute into the third period on the power play restoring the three goal margin with a 4-1 scoreline. The Petes added a fifth goal from Liam Heelis at 9:36 to make it 5-1 for Peterborough and put an end to the scoring. The game ended with physical play and more penalties. Devante Smith-Pelly was ejected with under four minutes remaining in the game. D'Agostini kept the Petes in the game and made 27 saves for the victory. Chris Carrozzi made 25 saves for the Majors and takes the loss. The Majors will return to action tomorrow afternoon at the Hershey Centre when they host the Sudbury Wolves at 2:00 p.m. Majors playoff tickets are now on sale at the Hershey Centre box office.
