Niagara IceDogs News Release
The IceDogs ended their 3 in 4 weekend in Peterborough Monday afternoon in a Family Day matinee. Coming into this game, the 'Dogs had lost their previous 9 games, mostly by a narrow margin. They came into this game motivated to break the streak against a Petes team that they hadn't faced since the beginning of October.
The Petes and IceDogs exchanged man advantages early in the 1st period., with both sides literally playing half of the period with either a man advantage or disadvantage. In the 2nd half of the first period, Akil Thomas got the IceDogs on the board first. Thomas picked up a loose puck just outside the blueline, skated it into the zone and beat Wells glove side to score his 17th goal of the season. Kirill Makismov was credited with the lone assist on Akil's goal. The Petes tied the game at 1 just over a minute later.
The Petes scored two goals in the second period to carry a 3-1 lead. In the final minute of the period, with a 4 on 4 opportunity before an IceDogs powerplay began, Sam Miletic broke his 3-game scoring drought to cut the Petes' lead to 1. Kirill Maksimov collected his second point of the game with an assist on Milly's goal.
The 'Dogs dominated much of the third period, with extended stretches of play being forced to stay in the Petes' zone. With just over 5 minutes remaining, Akil Thomas showed off his great hand-eye coordination to bat the puck out of midair and force it into the back of the net. Akil's 2nd goal of the game was assisted by Johnny Corneil and Adrian Carbonara. Both teams continued to press for a go-ahead goal, but 60 minutes of regulation hockey wasn't enough. The game went to overtime.
The Petes scored with just over 3 minutes remaining in overtime to win 4-3. While the 'Dogs didn't break their streak, they picked up a point in the scoring race.
The IceDogs return home Thursday night, where they host the Saginaw Spirit.
