Spirit Break up Shutout Bid with Late Goal, Fall to Sarnia 6-1

SARNIA, Ont. - On Monday afternoon, the Saginaw Spirit (27-21-8-0) traveled to Sarnia to play the Sarnia Sting (40-13-4-0) for the sixth and final time in the regular season. Spirit goaltender Cameron Lamour got the start on Monday making his 15th appearance of the season. Lamour has had two wins in his previous two apperances against Sarnia during the 2017-18 regular season.

Sarnia took the lead in the first period with three goals followed by a goaltender change for Saginaw. Two goals were added to the score count in the second period making the tally 5-0. A goal in the third for Sarnia took them to a 6-0 lead. In the last minute of play, 2018 NHL Draft prospect Max Grondin scored denying the shutout and ending the game in a 6-1 decision.

The Spirit got some good looks early on in the first period as they went to a power play at 1:15 of the period. Mason Kohn took advantage of a Sting turnover on the boards and had a clear shot on Justin Fazio but was denied by a glove save. At the halfway point in the period a Saginaw turnover at the blue line allowed Sarnia native Franco Sproviero to take control of the puck. Sproviero rushed down the right side and broke through the Spirit defense to score the first goal of the game. Los Angeles Kings prospect and Michigan native Drake Rymsha scored the Sting's second goal which was reviewed for offside, but determined a goal taking the score to 2-0. St. Louis Blues prospect Jordan Kyrou wrapped around the net to beat Lamour on his far side right pad, scoring at 12:03. New Jersey Devils prospect Evan Cormier entered the game after Kyrou's goal to relieve Lamour. The Spirit headed into the locker room trailing 3-0.

Sarnia found themselves on a penalty kill in the first minute of play when former Michigan State Spartan  Mitch Eliot was called from tripping at 1:09. The Sting registered the first three penalties of the game. A drop back pass for Calgary Flames prospect Adam Ruzicka allowed a shot right between Cormier's legs for a fourth goal for Sarnia. A hit after the whistle from Hugo Leufvenius ruffled feathers and resulted in two Sarnia penalties and one Spirit penalty. This theme continued as Rymsha and Damien Giroux got tangled up late in the second period. With 20 seconds left on the clock, Cormier had a big save on a shot fired by Jonathan Ang, but Rymsha was there to get the rebound and score his 2nd goal of the game.

Six minutes into the third period, Sean Josling slid the puck past Cormier for a 6-0 lead. Things continued heating up as various Sting players mixed up with Spirit players. A tussle in front of the net lead to a Spirit penalty kill which was successfully killed denying the Sting another goal. With a last run and burst of speed Max Grondin faced Justin Fazio and beat him up high for the Spirit's lone goal. The series between Saginaw and Sarnia ended with the Spirit taking the first three games and the Sting winning the last three with a 6-1 victory on Monday.
