Niagara IceDogs News Release
Brampton, Ont. (Sunday, March 11) - The Mississauga IceDogs traveled to Brampton this afternoon in the hopes of capturing their second win in a row. Fortunately, they did just that, defeating the Battalion 7-4. As a result, their record improves to 41-21-0-3 and they remain within four points of Barrie, the Eastern Conference leaders.
The IceDogs got off to a 2-0 lead early in the 1st period. Chris Lawrence opened the scoring at 4:23, setting a new team record with his 44th goal of the campaign. This was followed by a shorthanded tally from Stefan Legein at 5:11. The assists on these goals were credited to Michael Swift, Nathan Martine and Luca Caputi.
The Battalion got themselves to within a goal at 9:44 when Thomas Stajan scored off of a John Seymour pass. However, it was overshadowed by two more IceDogs goals, a power-play marker at 12:31 by Alex Pietrangelo and a shorthanded tally from Jean-Michel Rizk at 18:07. The helpers on these goals went to Caputi, Jordan Owens and Oskar Osala.
The Battalion struck again when Cody Hodgson found the back of the net at 3:29 after receiving Luke Lynes and Jason Dale passes. However, the IceDogs retaliated with another power-play goal at 15:00, this time by Osala with Pietrangelo and Drew Schiestel providing the support.
Things did not quiet down in the 3rd period. The Battalion, once again opened the scoring, this time it was Hodgson from Dale. Thankfully, the IceDogs put the game out of reach with two more goals at 12:13 and 14:05. The goalscorers were Osala and Legein with helpers contributed by Rizk, Martine and Owens.
The Battalion netted another goal only 23 seconds later, but that's as close as they could get. The final Battalion tally went to Justin Levac with Graham McNabb and Kyle Sonnenburg getting the assists.
Andrew Loverock had the start in net for the IceDogs and made 24 saves while counterpart Bryan Pitton produced 29 stops for Brampton. The IceDogs were 2 for 4 on the power-play while the Battalion were 0 for 4. The game's three stars were Legein (1st), Hodgson (2nd) and Osala (3rd).
The IceDogs have three regular season games remaining. On Thursday evening, they travel to Barrie for a 7:30 p.m. showdown with the Colts. Then, the return home to host the Peterborough Petes on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. and the Kingston Frontenacs on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.
