Niagara IceDogs News Release
Mitchell Theoret scored two goals while Freddie Hamilton pitched in with his third goal in two games as the IceDogs were edged in a close 4-3 shootout loss to the Windsor Spitfires at the Gatorade Garden City Complex Saturday night. Mark Visentin stopped 31 shots for the âDogs in the close thriller.
Freddie Hamilton started from where he left off last night as he scored another nifty goal just 1:48 into the first period to give the IceDogs an early 1-0 lead over the Spitfires. Hamilton scored two goals, one assist and the shootout winner last night against the Brampton Battalion, giving him four points in the past two games.
Niagara played a solid game in the first, but got into some penalty trouble in the latter half of the period and Zack MacQueen scored his 5th of the year on the power play to tie the game at one.
The IceDogs fought right back as Mitchell Theoret came forth with a solid individual effort in the Spitfires corner as he stepped out from the half boards and wristed a shot past Dallas Stars draftee Jack Campbell to regain the lead.
The score would remain 2-1 in Niagara's favour going into the first intermission.
Windsor opened the scoring in the second at the mark as Nick Czinder corralled the puck after a bad defensive giveaway and bounced it off the boards behind Mark Visentin and right back onto his stick to tap it in and tie the game 2-2.
Mitchell Theoret continued to press hard as he battled in front of the Windsor net and managed to find a loose puck and jam it passed Campbell to regain the IceDogs lead for a second time, making the score 3-2 IceDogs after 40 minutes.
Mike Schwindt took an interference penalty late in the second, and Windsor started the third period on the power play.
The Spits wasted no time as captain Ryan Ellis scored just 16 seconds into the frame on the power play to tie the game once again; 3-3.
The rest of the third was scoreless, but both teams had several great scoring chances. The game would keep its 3-3 tie forcing it into overtime.
The overtime period was nothing short of intense as the IceDogs almost finished the game several times with great work in the offensive zone by Ryan Strome, the Hamilton brothers, and David Pacan, but Jack Campbell answered the bell for his team and came up with some huge saves, bringing the game into a shootout.
Ryan Ellis would be the first of six players to score in the shootout, winning it for the Spitfires and giving the IceDogs a 10-4-1-1 record.
The IceDogs return to action next Thursday, Nov. 4 at the Gatorade Garden City Complex as they prepare to do battle with Memorial Cup hosts in the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors with a 7 p.m. start time.
Niagara will then play host to the Peterborough Petes on Saturday, Nov. 6, with another 7 p.m. puck drop.
Plenty of great seats are still available for both games, and fans are encouraged to purchase their tickets early and come support your Niagara IceDogs in their two home games next weekend.
Tickets are available at any IceDogs ticketing location. For more information, please contact the IceDogs office at 905-687-DOG1. Office hours are Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
