Niagara IceDogs News Release
Sarnia, Ont. - The Mississauga IceDogs traveled to Sarnia this evening in an attempt to defeat the Sting for the second time in just over a week. After building up a big lead, the IceDogs were forced to watch the Sting climb back into the game. Fortunately, Mississauga hung on for an 8-6 victory, improving their record to 31-17-0-2 on the year.
The game turned into a power-play affair in a hurry. Steven Stamkos' goal 4:34 into the contest, on the man-advantage, off of Craig Voakes and Harrison Reed passes, gave the home squad the early lead. However, the IceDogs rang off four goals before the end of the frame to jump ahead 4-1. The goalscorers were Chris Lawrence, Nathan Martine, Michael Swift and Stefan Legein with the assists going to Martine, Swift, Oskar Osala, Alex Pietrangelo, Jadran Beljo and Jordan Owens.
The 2nd period was a mirror image of the 1st. Trevor Kell got the Sting going at 13:31, with Reed providing the support. Then, the IceDogs responded with a string of tallies, this time courtesy of Osala, Swift and Luca Caputi. The assists on these goals were grabbed by Owens (2), Martine, Pietrangelo and Matt Corrente.
The trend was reversed in the 3rd period as the Sting rattled off four straight goals, at 3:55, 6:05, 11:17 and 17:38, to make it 7-6. Three of these tallies came on the man-advantage with the Sting goalscorers consisting of Reed, Kell, Ryan Wilson and Justin DiBenedetto. Fortunately, Legein added the much-important insurance goal for the IceDogs, into an empty-net, after receiving a Pietrangelo pass, with 28 seconds remaining in regulation.
Andrew Loverock finished the night with 38 saves for the IceDogs while Parker VanBuskirk supplied 28 for the Sting. The IceDogs were 3 for 6 on the power-play while the Sting were 4 for 8. The game's three stars were Swift (1st), Kell (2nd) and Martine (3rd).
The IceDogs return home next Friday evening (February 9) to host the Toronto St. Michael's Majors at 7:30 p.m.
