IceDogs Complete Third Period Comeback in Win over 67's
November 18, 2016 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Niagara IceDogs News Release
The Niagara IceDogs welcomed the Ottawa 67's to the Meridian Centre on Friday night for the first of four meetings between the teams this season. Having collected points in 3 straight games heading into tonight's battle, the IceDogs had an opportunity to gain some ground in a tight Central division standings race.
As one might expect, the first period was played conservatively by both teams. When becoming acquainted with a new opponent, the importance of playing the right way on both sides of the puck is paramount to early success. The IceDogs played responsible hockey and Stephen Dhillon turned aside 17 shots en route to a scoreless opening frame.
Ottawa jumped to a 1-0 lead less than a minute into the second period. While the offensive chances for both teams began to add up, it was a showdown between the pipes as Dhillon and his counterpart shut the door at both ends. Through 40 minutes, the score remained 1-0 in favour of the 67's.
Like so many times before, the IceDogs found a way to respond in the third period. Veteran Aaron Haydon took a slick breakaway pass from Chris Paquette and turned it into a top shelf backhand goal for his 4th of the season at 5:31 to tie the game at 1. Less than three minutes later, Matthew Philip buried his 6th of the year from Ryan Mantha to give the IceDogs a 2-1 lead. Ottawa managed to tally two quick goals to take a 3-2 lead shortly after, however the IceDogs never stopped believing. At 16:42, Ondrej Machala buried his 3rd of the season to tie the game at 3 on assists from Hayden Davis and Johnathon Schaefer. Just 13 seconds later, Philip potted his 2nd of the night to put the IceDogs ahead 4-3 with 3:05 remaining on assists from Danial Singer and Oliver Castleman. Aaron Haydon would add an empty netter as the IceDogs completed the comeback from 1-0 and 3-2 deficits in the third period to win by a score of 5-3.
The IceDogs are back at home on Saturday night as they host the London Knights at the Meridian Centre for a 7:00 puck drop. Tickets are still available and can be purchased online HERE or in person at the following locations:
