
IceDogs Close out Regular Season with 6-3 Win over Steelheads

Your Niagara IceDogs were back home Saturday afternoon as they took on the Mississauga Steelheads in their final game of the regular season. These two teams last faced each other at the end of February, in Mississauga, when the 'Dogs fell 4-0. Coming into tonight's game, the IceDogs will be looking to finish their regular season on a high, and extend their 6-game winning streak to 7. The Steelheads come into this game, Mississauga has won 4 of its last 5 games. The IceDogs wore green, St. Patrick's Day jerseys, which were auctioned live after the game, with all proceeds being donated in support of Crohn's and Colitis Canada.
Prior to the start of today's game, we honoured our three graduating players, Adrian Carbonara, Sam Miletic, and Johnny Corneil, as they completed their OHL regular season careers with us today.
The Steelheads took the early 1-0 lead. After allowing the first goal, Stevie shut the door, making a huge save on Owen Tippett nearing the midway point of the first. Ben Jones picked up right where he left off last night, scoring the tying goal on Vella. Jonesy's 29th goal of the season was assisted by the captain Johnny Corneil.
Early in the second period, after killing off a penalty of their own, the IceDogs found themselves on a power play. Liam Ham shot the puck from the blueline. The puck bounced past the Steelheads' defence and into the net. Hammer's 6th goal of the year was assisted by Akil Thomas and Kirill Maksimov. Just over 7 minutes into the period, Kyle Langdon was chopped down on a shorthanded breakaway. Langer was awarded a penalty shot, but the puck stopped just short of the goal line, under the goaltender's pad. The 2-1 score held going into the third period.
The IceDogs entered the third period with almost a full powerplay. Ben Jones scored his 4th goal in less than 24 hours to give us the 3-1 lead! Jonesy's second of the game was assisted by Akil Thomas, and Sam Miletic.Seconds later, Johnny Corneil scored from the top of the faceoff circle to extend our lead to 3! Owen Tippett scored to cut out lead in half, making the score 4-2. With seven and a half remaining, Michael McLeod cut out lead down to one. Kirill Maksimov got one back with over 3 minutes to play in the third, with his 34th of the season. Maksi's goal was assisted by Johnny Corneil. Oliver Castleman scored an empty net goal to take this one 6-3!
'Dogs ended the regular season on a 7-game win streak!
