Niagara IceDogs News Release
Mark Visentin recorded his second career OHL shutout to lead the Niagara IceDogs to a 3-0 victory over the visiting Erie Otters at the Gatorade Garden City Complex Thursday night. Ryan Strome and Freddie Hamilton also played stellar games as they notched three points each, while Jason Wilson and Dougie Hamilton each picked up assists in the win.
The IceDogs opened the scoring at the 1:10 mark of the first as Ryan Strome capitalized on a Freddie Hamilton rebound to pick up his 24th goal of the season, giving Niagara an early 1-0 lead.
The same line connected once again just moments later at the 5:15 mark - this time Strome making a pass to Jason Wilson, who slid the puck across the Otters' crease right onto the stick of Freddie Hamilton who made no mistake in tapping it into a wide-open net to increase the 'Dogs lead to 2-0.
The remainder of the period was scoreless and Niagara took the 2-0 lead into the intermission.
Ryan Strome continued to be active in the second period, but this time it was in the penalty column as he went off early in the frame for slashing.
The Otters had a few good chances on the power play, but Mark Visentin stood on his head and made several key saves, while defenseman Dougie Hamilton also took a turn playing goalie with a clutch glove save of his own to maintain the 2-0 lead and kill of the penalty.
At the 12:37 mark of the second, Freddie Hamilton picked up his second goal of the game after accepting another beautiful pass from Ryan Strome to put the 'Dogs up 3-0 after 40 minutes of play.
Mike Schwindt took a penalty for holding at the end of the second putting Erie on the power play to begin the third, and the IceDogs continued to face penalty troubles accumulating six more minor penalties throughout the frame, but with a solid defensive effort, Niagara killed them all off and held onto their 3-0 lead until the clock ran out.
The IceDogs next game takes place tomorrow as they pay a visit to the London Knights at 7:30 p.m., before returning home to host the Barrie Colts on Saturday, Jan. 15 at 7 p.m. to cap off the weekend.
Tickets for Saturday's home game are still available and can be purchased at any IceDogs ticketing location. For more information, please contact the IceDogs office at 905-687-DOG1.
