Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
The Mississauga St. Michael s Majors were in Brampton this evening to face the Battalion. It was the fourth meeting of the season between the Peel Region rivals. Thanks to a strong goaltending performance by JP Anderson and a balanced offensive attack, the Majors were able to stay undefeated against Brampton this season with a 4-0 victory.
The Majors jumped out to an early lead when Derek Schoenmakers got his 5th of the season just 2:06 into the game. The goal was assisted by Riley Brace and Corey Bureau. While Brampton could not muster any offence against the Majors, Casey Cizikas expanded the Mississauga lead at 6:12 with an unassisted goal, his 21st of the season, to make it 2-0. Cizikas has been on fire since returning from the World Junior Hockey Championships with six points in two games last weekend. The Majors outshot Brampton 14-12 in the first period.
Mississauga continued to add to their lead in the second period. At 10:21, Mississauga native Chris DeSousa recorded his first goal as a Major with Devante Smith-Pelly getting the only assist on the goal. At 17:51, Joe Cramarossa made if 4-0 Majors with his 9th goal of the season. Mika Partanen and Marc Cantin had the assists. Off the following face off, Cramarossa continued to be the centre of attention when he dropped the gloves with Philip Lane. Cramarossa and Lane spent the rest of the period in the locker room, serving five minute majors for their scrap at 17:53. The Majors controlled the game in second, outshooting the Battalion 13-4.
The third period was somewhat uneventful. Neither team found the back of the net and only one penalty was called when Mika Partanen took a high sticking penalty at 2:34. The Majors outshot Brampton once again in the final frame, this time, 13-6.
Battalion goaltender Matej Machovsky faced 40 shots in the game and made 36 saves, taking the loss. JP Anderson stopped all 22 shots he faced for the win and his 4th shutout of the season. The Majors swept the stars with the honours going to Cantin (3rd), Cramarossa (2nd) and Anderson (1st).
The Majors return home tomorrow for their first home game since the World Junior Hockey Championships. It will mark the first game back in Mississauga for Casey Cizikas and Dave Cameron while newcomers Maxim Kitsyn, Chris DeSousa, Michael D Orazio and Mickael Audette will appear in their first game at the Hershey Centre.
