Niagara IceDogs News Release

The Niagara IceDogs blanked the Barrie Colts by a commanding score of 10-0 in front of 3,041 fans at the Gatorade Garden City Complex Friday night. Eight different IceDogs scored while several had multi-point games as they defeated the Colts for the second time in the past week. Niagara outscored Barrie 18-3 in their last two match-ups.

In the absence of starting goaltender Mark Visentin who is away practicing with the Team Canada World Junior team, both Dalton McGrath and Michael Gallardi got a chance to play in net for the IceDogs, and the Colts were unable to solve either netminder.

The IceDogs sent the teddy bears flying just 3:27 into the game on the power play as Freddie Hamilton tapped in a cross crease pass from Andrew Agozzino to give the 'Dogs an early 1-0 lead.

Freddie Hamilton followed up shortly after by taking a beautiful shot from the face-off dot to beat Clint Windsor top shelf on his glove side and pick up his second goal of the game (15th of the season), giving the 'Dogs a 2-0 lead.

Jason Wilson then took a minor penalty for charging, but the scoring clinic would only continue as Alex Friesen took a perfect breakaway pass from Andrew Agozzino while shorthanded and beat Windsor with a backhand glove side to increase the Niagara lead to 3-0.

Andrew Agozzino then took a turn scoring at the 8:33 mark to pick up his team-leading 22nd of the season with the help of Jason Wilson and Dougie Hamilton, before former Colt Darren Archibald tapped in a centering pass from David Pacan to notch his first goal in an IceDogs uniform and give the 'Dogs a 5-0 lead.

Things were just not going Barrie's way in the first as Niagara managed to score another two goals just past the midway mark of the period. Johnson Andrews scored his second of the season after making a beautiful move on a breakaway to end the night for Clint Windsor, before Alex Friesen potted his second of the game on former teammate John Chartrand at the 12:22 mark.

The IceDogs followed those two markers with another goal from the fourth line as Mitchell Theoret gave a solid effort behind the net to centre a pass to Dylan MacEachern who scored his 3rd of the season, giving Niagara a commanding 8-0 lead.

Things calmed down for the remainder of the period, but the IceDogs took a comfortable 8-0 lead into the first intermission. After 20 minutes of play, the IceDogs out-shot the Colts 20-4, and won 25 of 30 face-offs.

It took the IceDogs a bit longer to score in the second period, but a goal came nonetheless as Johnson Andrews fed Mitchell Theoret to give Niagara a 9-0 lead at the 7:32 mark of the frame. Andrews, Theoret and Dougie Hamilton each picked up their second point of the game on the play.

Following the goal, IceDogs rookie defenseman Luke Mercer was hit from behind by Colts forward Mitch Bennett, and IceDogs assistant captain Dylan MacEachern answered the bell and went toe-to-toe with Bennett in a spirited tilt to stand up for his teammate and set the physical tone.

The IceDogs would face a series of penalties throughout the remainder for the second, but they managed to kill them off and hold on to their 9-0 lead after 40 minutes.

In the third, coach Marty Williamson decided to give starting goalie Dalton McGrath a rest and allow rookie tender Michael Gallardi to finish the game for the IceDogs.

With a fresh goalie in net, Niagara managed to bring the score into the double-digits as Dougie Hamilton potted his 5th of the season (third point of the night) on a power play at the 5:41 mark of the third with the help of Darren Archibald and Steven Shipley.

At the 14:35 mark of the third, Mike Schwindt and Colts forward Aaron Taylor exchanged pleasantries after Taylor laid a massive hit on an IceDogs defender in front of the Niagara bench.

The fight would be the last bit of action the game saw, and the IceDogs would take a 10-0 win over the Barrie Colts in front of a home crowd.

The IceDogs next game takes place tomorrow (Saturday) Dec. 18 as they visit the Owen Sound Attack at 7:30 p.m. in what will be their last contest before the Christmas break.
