Mississauga, ON- The line of Riley Brace, Justin Shugg, and Devante Smith-Pelly combined to score five goals and power the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors past the Sudbury Wolves, 9-4 tonight at the Hershey Centre. The win improves the Majors record to 27-4-0-1 on the season.
The game began as a see-saw battle which each team exchanging goals until the Majors began to pull away midway through the second period and did not look back creating a comfortable lead and maintaining it. Riley Brace got things started for the Majors just over 12 minutes into the first period after Alain Valiquette made two stops on Smith-Pelly, Brace was there to bang in the rebound to make it 1-0. The Wolves responded seconds later when Samuel Schutt tied the game at 1-1. Majors goaltender JP Anderson made four saves before Schutt jammed in the loose puck. Justin Shugg put the Majors back on top with a shorthanded goal just seconds later after forcing a turnover at centre ice and beating Valiquette to make it 2-1. Sudbury again immediately responded to tie the game at 2-2 when Michael Sgarbossa scored on the power play after beating Anderson low on the glove side. The game remained tied at the end of the first period.
At 8:52 of the second period the Majors regained the lead when Riley Brace scored his second goal of the game off a rebound to make it 3-2. Marc Cantin's shot rang off the post and deflected right onto the stick of Brace who put it away. Brace completed the hat-trick with a tap-in just four minutes later after receiving a gift pass from Justin Shugg to make it 4-2. Smith-Pelly increased the lead to three goals after beating Valiquette high on the short side for his twentieth goal of the season. Joseph Cramarossa made it 6-2 after scoring on a breakaway after a precise pass from Corey Bureau with just over a minute to play in the period. The Majors took the four goal lead into the third period.
David Corrente scored his first goal of the season just over a minute into the third period on the power play after firing a bullet from the point that beat Jacob Riley who replaced Valiquette in the Sudbury net to make it 7-2. Joshua Leivo pulled the Wolves to within four just 50 seconds later but Gregg Sutch restored the five goal cushion at 2:27 breaking a scoring drought for the veteran winger. Sgarbossa added his second goal of the game and Jordan Mayer scored later for the Majors making the final 9-4 for Mississauga. The line of Brace, Smith-Pelly, and Shugg finished the game with five goals and 12 points. Riley Brace's hat-trick for Mississauga made it back-to-back games that a Majors player has scored three goals. Devante Smith-Pelly had a goal and four assists, while Shugg added three assists to his one goal for a four point night. JP Anderson made 26 saves to earn the victory for Mississauga, while Alain Valiquette and Jacob Riley combined for 36 saves, Valiquette takes the loss for Sudbury.
