Worcester IceCats News Release


Worcester, MA --- Worcester IceCats Head Coach Don Granato today announced that right wing Eric Nickulas has been named the IceCats captain for the 2002-2003 season. Defensemen Terry Virtue and Matt Walker were also named assistant captains.

A native of Hyannis, Massachusetts, Nickulas accumulated 11 goals and 25 assists in 54 games with the 'Cats last season and finished second on the team with a 'plus 19' rating: 54(11/25/36). The 5'11", 195 lb winger was re-signed as a free agent on July 16th, 2002. The former 1994 draft pick by the Boston Bruins, was a member of the 1999 Calder Cup Championship team in Providence.

The 32 year old Virtue was an original member of the IceCats, suiting up for 73 games during the team's inaugural season in 1994-95. He continued with the club through the 1997-98 campaign. Despite playing in the AHL rival cities of Providence and Hartford over the last four seasons, the crafty defenseman continues to pace the IceCats in several all-time categories. The native of Scarborough, Ontario is the all-time Worcester leader in games played (303), assists (108), points (153) and penalty minutes (873).

Walker, the Blues third choice, 83rd overall in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft was named the IceCats Most Improved Player last season. His two season IceCats totals show 110 games played, six goals, 19 assists, 25 points and 295 penalty minutes: 110(6/19/25)295.

The IceCats kick-off the 2002-2003 season in Manitoba tomorrow and Saturday night at 8:30 PM. Tomorrow night will also mark the return of internet broadcasts of IceCats games. Fans worldwide will be able to catch all the IceCats games by logging on to worcestericecats.com and clicking the "Listen Live" link.

Opening night at Worcester's Centrum Centre is Saturday, October 19th against the Portland Pirates. Faceoff is 7:05 PM.
