St. John's IceCaps News Release
Chad Johnson pitched a shutout against the IceCaps for the second time in less than two weeks as St. John's fell 3-0 to the Portland Pirates Friday night at Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland, ME.
Johnson turned aside all 31 shots he faced in handing the IceCaps (4-5-0-0) their second consecutive shutout loss and third in the last four games. St. John's has now gone 131 minutes and 33 seconds without scoring a goal. The team's last goal came from Eric O'Dell on October 27 in the third period of a 3-2 win over the Norfolk Admirals.
Chris Brown, Brett Hextall and Brendan Shinnimin scored for the home side in the victory. Carl Klingberg led St. John's with four shots on goal.
Portland jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the IceCaps got into penalty trouble early in the first. Ben Maxwell and Travis Ramsey took minor penalties within two seconds of each other, and Jason Jaffray continued the parade to the box less than a minute later when he took a cross-checking penalty. After the IceCaps successfully killed off the initial two infractions, Pirates defenceman Michael Stone sprung Brown, who was in behind the defence, and the forward slid the puck through Pasquale's legs to give the home side a one-goal advantage.
Hextall made it 2-0 midway through the second period on a harmless-looking play. The winger floated a shot from the right wing boards inside the IceCaps' blueline that fooled Pasquale, giving the Pirates some insurance heading into the third period.
In the final frame, the Pirates padded their lead at the 4:13 mark when Brendan Shinnimin deflected a shot by Brown at the point that beat a stick-less Pasquale high for a 3-0 lead.
St. John's went 0-for-6 on the power play while Portland scored once on six chances.
The IceCaps continue their five-game road trip Saturday with a stop at the DCU Center to face the Worcester Sharks.
