IceCaps Dropped by Pirates

February 6, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
St. John's IceCaps News Release

The Portland Pirates scored three goals in the first period, added another three in the second period and potted two more in the third en route to an 8-1 win over the St. John's IceCaps at Mile One Centre on Friday night.

Kyle MacKinnon replied in the second period for the IceCaps, who are now winless in their last two games.

The Pirates got goals from eight different players, including Henrik Samuelsson, Greg Carey, Francis Wathier, Joel Hanley, Jordan Szwarz, Jordan Martinook, Darian Dziurzynski and Jordon Southorn, while starting netminder Mike McKenna turned away all but one of the 24 shots he faced to earn the win.

It took the Pirates just 1:19 to open the scoring on Samuelsson's tenth goal of the year. Carey and Wathier each added a goal in the first period, chasing IceCaps starter Connor Hellebuyck after 16:47 of playing time. He allowed three goals on 11 shots against.

His replacement, the recently recalled Jussi Olkinuora finished the game between the pipes for the IceCaps and stopped 17 of the 22 shots he faced.

The IceCaps started the climb back early in the second period as MacKinnon perfectly deflected a Brendan Kichton pass behind McKenna on the power play just 1:09 into the frame.

The Pirates stole momentum back before the end of the second period as they responded with three goals, from Hanley and Szwarz, then a last-second dagger off the stick of Martinook, to give the Pirates a 6-1 lead after 40 minutes.

Dziurzynski beat Olkinuora on a breakaway just one minute into the third to end any hopes of an IceCaps comeback and Southorn poured salt in the wound with a tally at 10:29.

The IceCaps will get their chance for revenge tomorrow night, Saturday, February 7, as the Pirates return to Mile One Centre for the final game of the current two-game set.
