Pirates Trounce IceCaps 8-1

St John's, N.L. - The Portland Pirates showed a strong performance in a 8-1 win Friday night against the St. John's IceCaps at the Mile One Centre in St. John's Newfoundland. All but one of the active players in the Pirates lineup recorded at least a point in the decision, which saw goals from eight different Pirates skaters.

Henrik Samuelsson kicked things off in the first period with a goal at 1:19, assisted by Jordan Martinook and Dylan Reese. Greg Carey put up the second goal for the Pirates at 13:27, assisted by Eric Selleck and Justin Hache. The Pirates continued to show dominance in the first period with a goal from Francis Wathier, assisted by Selleck and Tyler Gaudet at 16:47.

The IceCaps put up their loan goal of the game at 1:09 when Kyle MacKinnon scored, assisted by Brenden Kichton and Will O'Neill. The Pirates put up their fourth of the night at 8:20 with a goal from Joel Hanley-his first of his AHL career-which was assisted by Philip Samuelsson and Gaudet. Jordan Szwarz netted one at 16:04 in the second frame, assisted by Greg Miller and Mark Louis. The next Portland goal came with just 0.3 seconds left in the second period, when Jordan Martinook found the back of the net with help from Dylan Reese and Philip Samuelsson.

Darian Dziurzynski kicked off the third period for Portland, scoring exactly a minute into the frame with assists from Brendan Gormley and Mike McKenna. Jordon Southorn put up the eighth of the night for the Pirates at 10:29 with helpers from Phil Lane and Louis.

It was an excellent night between the pipes for Pirates goalie Mike McKenna, who allowed 1 goal over 24 shots. Connor Hellebuyck started in net for the IceCaps, saving 8 of 11 shots faces before being pulled after the Wthier goal in the first period. Jussi Olkinuora came in after Hellebuyck, saving 17 of 22 shots faced.

The Pirates and IceCaps will face off again tomorrow at the Mile One Centre as part of the Eimskip Port-to-Port Challenge. The Pirates will return home after nearly a month away on Tuesday, February 17 when they face the Hartford Wolfpack. For tickets and more information, call 207-PIRATES.
