Charlotte Checkers News Release

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Jeff Daniels, general manager and coach of the AHL's Charlotte Checkers, today announced that the team has signed forward Jason Bast to a professional tryout contract.

Bast, 25, has spent the majority of the season with the Idaho Steelheads of the ECHL, racking up 44 points (25g, 19a) in 43 games. He recently earned the ECHL's Rookie of the Month award for January by scoring 17 points in 14 games, becoming just the sixth player to earn the award multiple times in the same season since 1997-98.

The undrafted center is tied for second in the ECHL in goals, is tied for ninth in scoring and holds a share of the scoring lead among ECHL rookies.

A native of Regina, Saskatchewan, Bast played five seasons in the WHL with Moose Jaw, where he totaled 254 points (114g, 140) in 331 games, before going to St. Francis Xavier University and racking up 110 points (37g, 73a) in 111 games over four seasons.

Bast made his AHL debut earlier this season, appearing in two games for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on a PTO before returning to Idaho.

Following a five-day break, the Checkers return to action for Pink in the Rink Weekend against the Chicago Wolves on Friday and Saturday. The ninth annual event, which is designed to raise funds and awareness for the fight against women's cancers, will feature an auction of pink helmets (Friday) and jerseys (Saturday) worn by the Checkers during each game.
