St. John's IceCaps News Release
The St. John's IceCaps announced their 2012-13 end-of-season awards prior to Sunday's home finale against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
Taking home the Most Valuable Player award was centre Eric O'Dell. The Ottawa native currently leads the IceCaps in goals, points, power play goals, and game-winning goals. He set new team single-season records with 28 goals and 52 points, and was selected as the CCM/AHL Player of the Week for the period ending March 17.
Top Defenceman honours went to Derek Meech. The veteran rearguard suited up in 46 games with the IceCaps, leading all blueliners in scoring with 23 points (3G, 20A) before being recalled by the Winnipeg Jets in late February. Meech was also the IceCaps' lone representative at the 2013 AHL All-Star Classic in Providence, RI.
Top Rookie went to defenceman Julian Melchiori. The Richmond Hill, Ontario native has been a fixture on the penalty kill and one of the IceCaps' ice-time leaders, logging minutes in all situations. He was recognized for his strong play on the blueline when he was recalled by the Winnipeg Jets in February.
The IceCaps Community Man of the Year was awarded to team captain Jason Jaffray. The IceCaps take pride in being part of the community and Jaffray led the charge all season. From school appearances to hospital and recreation centre visits, Jaffray was front and centre for the organization.
Finally, the Fans Choice Award also went to Jaffray, who collected the most votes in a contest held on the IceCaps' Facebook page. A heart and soul player, Jaffray's contributions were felt both on-and-off the ice. Jaffray returned from a serious injury suffered late last season to resume his role as leader of the IceCaps and further endear himself to fans at Mile One Centre.
