December 8, 2019 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Winnipeg Ice News Release
It was Teddy Bear Toss Night at Wayne Fleming Arena as the ICE were taking on the Kamloops Blazers. After both teams were involved in thrilling extra time games on Friday night, the Kamloops Blazers and Winnipeg ICE met at Wayne Fleming Arena, with the ICE coming off a OT victory against the Regina Pats and the Blazers beating the Wheat Kings in a shootout.
Both teams had a few good scoring chances in the first frame but it remained scoreless going into the first intermission. Liam Hughes was the busier goalie with 10 saves for the ICE, as Dylan Garand stopped 8 for the Blazers.
The Blazers broke the deadlock halfway through the second period as Josh Pillar scored for Kamloops from Montana Onyebuchi. Kamloops' captain Zane Franklin then scored two goals in a span of 62 seconds in the last two minutes of the period to give the Blazers a 3-0 lead. On the second goal, Blazers' defense man Montana Onyebuchi received a game misconduct as well as a five minute major for goaltender interference, after the puck had gone into the net.
Ben Zloty got his first career WHL goal on the ensuing five minute major as the ICE cut the Blazer's lead to 3-1, two minutes into the third period. The Teddy Bear Toss goal sparked the ICE as they scored two more goals before the halfway mark of the third period, tying the game at 3-3. However, the Blazers would score the go ahead goal with six minutes left in the game. The ICE weren't going away that easily as Connor McClennon tied the game up with a minute and a half left to force OT. Just one minute into OT Michal Teply put away his 13th of the year to push the ICE's home winning streak to seven games.
