THE SERIES: This is the seventh meeting of the season between the Pensacola Ice Pilots and the Columbia Inferno. It's just the third visit by the Inferno to the Gulf Coast this year. The Ice Pilots have won three of four meetings in South Carolina, while the Inferno have won both games at The Hangar.
These teams meet for a second time on Friday night before a third time together on Tuesday at Carolina Coliseum in Columbia.
Rob Rankin and Sergei Ogorodnikov lead all point getters for the Ice Pilots with five points each. Rankin has five assists, while Ogorodnikov has one goal and four helpers.
Mike Jarmuth leads the Inferno attack with two goals and seven assists. However, he won't be available to the team tonight as he was called up to the Norfolk Admirals of the American Hockey League.
ICE PILOTS REWIND: Seven different goal scorers powered the Pensacola Ice Pilots to a 7-3 triumph over the Columbia Inferno on Tuesday night at The Hangar. John Hecimovic, Niko Tuomi, Erik Johnson, Dan Sullivan, Greg Watson, Rich Meloche and David Wrigley all scored for the Ice Pilots. Michael Mole notched the win in goal. Forward Sergei Ogorodnikov had four helpers, while Rene Gauthier chipped in three assists. The Ice Pilots led 2-1 after the first period and 4-2 through 40 minutes.
ICE CHIPS: John Hecimovic continues his outstanding play lately and has eight points (six goals and 2 assists) in his last four games.
The Ice Pilots penalty killing has been solid in the last four games surrendering just three goals against the No. 1 (Gwinnett) and No. 2 (Texas) power plays in the ECHL. All three goals were given up against the Wildcatters.
The victory on Tuesday night was the second over the Gwinnett Gladiators this season and 13th when the Ice Pilots have a lead through 40 minutes of hockey.
INFERNO AS COLD AS WEATHER UP NORTH: The Columbia Inferno managed just one point in three games during their Northern swing through the state of Ohio. The Inferno was beaten twice by the Toledo Storm 3-1 and 3-0 and fell 4-3 in overtime on Sunday afternoon. Jeff Miles notched two assists in the overtime loss on Sunday. Anthony Battaglia, Owen Fussy, Mac Faulkner and Luke Fulghum were the goal getters over the weekend.
