Salmon Kings streak snapped by Las Vegas
February 22, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings, proud affiliate of the Manitoba Moose and the Vancouver Canucks, head into the first game of the series versus Las Vegas with a three-game winning streak, but had it put to rest as the Wranglers' Goaltender Mike McKenna nabbed a shutout for the 5-0 win.
The Wranglers roped in three goals in the first period for an early lead. Aki Seitsonen spotted Marco Peluso in a cross slot pass to beat Netminder Julien Ellis at 9:59 into the frame. Las Vegas took a 2-0 lead 32 seconds later as Steve Crampton scooped up a rebound in front of the Victoria crease for his 15th goal of the season. Just over two minutes later, the Wranglers turned away a Victoria rush to create their own, and in a one-on-one Defenseman Aaron Power found the farside top corner with a right-handed shot from the edge of the left circle.
The Salmon Kings lifted the crowd of 3,571 in the middle frame with chances in the Las Vegas zone, but the Wranglers countered with a powerplay goal with 5:58 remaining. Nick Anderson carried the puck from the left to the right circle and squeezed a shot through the five-hole of Ellis for the 4-0 advantage.
Las Vegas added another in the third with 4:02 remaining in the game as Kelly Czuy picked off a pass at the blueline and fled on the breakaway. He snuck the backhand five-hole for his ninth goal of the season.
Final: 5-0 Wranglers
McKenna marked his 15th win of the season and his fourth shutout, and Ellis suffered his 12th loss of the season. Victoria was 0 for 3 on the powerplay and Las Vegas scored once in three chances with the man advantage. The Wranglers outshot the Salmon Kings 30-22. The Salmon Kings (23-30-0-1) reshuffle for game two of the series against the Las Vegas Wranglers (29-10-6-6) this Friday at 7:05 p.m. at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre.
