Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release
The Pensacola Ice Flyers travelled to northern Alabama Friday night to take on the Huntsville Havoc and came away with a convincing 5-1 victory, making it their 5th straight win - their longest streak of the 2011-12 season. The Ice Flyers' special teams came to life as they scored 3 powerplay goals and 1 shorhanded.
It did not take long for the Ice Flyers to strike as Adam Kuhn buried the puck past Havoc goalie, Kevin Beech, just 1:21 into the game on a beautiful tic-tac-toe play set up by Chris Wilson and Andrew Howes. There was no further action on the scoreboard in the first, until Andrew Harrison scored his 11th of the season on the powerplay with 40 seconds left in the first. Defensemen Ryan Corry and former Havoc, Ryan Salvis, drew the assists. The first period ended 2-0 with the Ice Flyers outshooting the Havoc 8-5.
Salvis would put his former team in a deeper hole when he scored on the powerplay 4:52 into the second frame, as he finished off a play from Corry and Tyler Soehner. Near the half way mark of the second, Huntsville got on the board with a tally from Glenn Detulleo, with assists from Ryan Ketzer and Joey Pell. However, at 14:29, Matthew Robertson regained the Ice Flyers' 3-goal lead with another powerplay marker, as Wilson and Soehner both recorded their second helpers of the night on the goal. The Havoc directed 14 shots on Ice Flyer goalie Steve Christie in the second and the Ice Flyers would shoot 9 on Beech in the net for the Havoc.
In the third, it was the other side of the Ice Flyers special teams that would add one to the scoreboard as Kevin Brojek sent captain Dan Buccella in on a partial breakaway and scoring short handed. After a penalty-filled remaining 10 minutes of the games, the final buzzer sounded on the Ice Flyers' 5th straight victory. The Havoc shot another 10 on Christie in the third bringing their game total to 29, and the Ice Flyers shot 9 for a game total of 26 shots.
Christie gets his 10th win of the season and improves his record to 10-2-0, and Beech records the loss and now has a record of 6-4-1. Christie was also named the game's first star, and Harrison and Corry from Pensacola were named the 2nd and 3rd stars, respectively.
With this win and with Columbus' loss tonight, Pensacola is now only 2 points back on Columbus for third place, but also has 3 games in hand on them. The Ice Flyers will have a true test tomorrow night at 7:05 PM in Pensacola as the first placed Knoxville Ice Bears come to town. These two teams have the 2 best records in the league since the start of December, and that match up will be the 3rd game in as many nights for both teams.
