Mississippi Surge News Release
Hello 2012:The Mississippi Surge plays its first home game of 2012 tonight, hosting the Knoxville Ice Bears.
Records: The Surge is 10-13-2 for 22 points in seventh place.
Knoxville is 20-6-0 for 40 points in second place.
Season Series:This is the third and final game of the season between these two teams. The two teams have split the first two games, both played in Knoxville. Knoxville won 5-3 on October 21st. The Surge won last night, 6-5. This will be Knoxville's only visit to the Surge this season.
Recent Action: Tonight is the second game in a home-and-home series between these two teams. The Surge rallied with two late goals for the win last night in Knoxville. It was the first home ice loss for Knoxville this season. The Surge scored a season high four goals in the second period, then had two goals in the final 1:35 to win the game.
Grant Leads The Charge: Both Surge goals in the third period last night came from Jeff Grant.
Off The Mark: Leading scorer Mark Versteeg-Lytwyn has been on a hot streak lately with four goals and two assists in his last three games. He will also be giving one fan his game worn jersey tonight, on the ice immediately after the game. Fans can purchase tickets for his jersey at each merchandise stand, the guest services center at the top of section 15 and through ticket sellers moving through the arena.
Big Advantage:The Surge went 3-for-5 on the power play last night and is currently second in the SPHL on the power play at 20.2 percent.
Next Up: The Surge continues a three game homestand with a Sunday contest against the in-state rival Mississippi RiverKings. That will be a tribute to Special Olympics and also a special salute to Mississippi born Elvis Presley. Through an Elvis trivia contest, one fan will win a platinum tour of Graceland. Sunday's game starts at 5:05 p.m. Knoxville moves on to play at Pensacola tomorrow night.
