SOUTHAVEN-The RiverKings' annual Face Off Field Trip, presented in November by Belhaven University, is set to become a bi-annual event on February 28, 2012 when the team - and presenting sponsor, Belhaven - bring it back for an encore run at the newly named Landers Center (formerly DeSoto Civic Center).

"From our perspective, this was a wonderful way to marry Belhaven University's emphasis on educating and cultivating great teachers with our emphasis on supporting teachers in the classroom by giving students an alternate, exciting take on things they are already learning every day," RiverKings General Manager Ab Mattice said.

The RiverKings method of accomplishing this energetically educational event revolves around two things: a multi-media, interactive game show format and a full-color, 32-page educational workbook that uses hockey to teach geography, math and English skills, healthy choices and more.

Instead of the usual sponsor-driven game stoppages, each break in the game is educational - a quiz question based on a page from the workbook, or a video featuring a RiverKings player that illustrates a core curriculum concept.

"We tried to spend an equal amount of space on each core subject, but teachers told us in feedback from the November event that they would like to see more math skills, so we'll be amending the workbook some to reflect that desire," Mattice said.

While content is geared toward students in grades 3-6, tickets are available to both K-12 and college students interested in observing the game, plus teachers and administrators for $2 per person in attendance. To book a group or classroom to attend, please apply for a reservation by contacting the RiverKings' Community Development department at 662.342.1755 or communitydevelopment@riverkings.com by Jan. 15.

Since the game is being moved from a night start to a day time, RiverKings management is planning a special evening event for season ticket holders that will include a skate with the players, a locker room and bus tour, and pizza as a replacement event. Additionally, the 7:05 p.m. ticket will be honored as admission to the 10:05 a.m. game for those season ticket holders who don't want to miss a game.

"It's a chance to fill up the house, and while our attendance grows considerably on our weekend games, Tuesdays are traditionally harder for us since so many of our fans have families and can't get out in the middle of the week," RiverKings General Manager Dave Mattice said.

"We are so thankful to our fans for their faithful attendance and support, especially the faithful attendees who do make it out for our mid-week games, and that's why we are really trying hard to put together a nice evening event to replace this game where they can get to know our players."

The Mississippi RiverKings are supported by their community partners, season ticket holders, fans, and by program-related investments of the Maddox Foundation, an independent private foundation based in Hernando, Miss.
