Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release

Pensacola, Fl - The Pensacola Ice Flyers refuse to leave the top of the standings. They showed their grit and determination Monday night in The Hangar as they battled to beat Mississippi in a thrilling shoot-out victory.

The game began much slower than the score would indicate with the first point not put on the board until well into the 1st period when Tanner Shultz found the back of the net in the seventeenth minute. Mississippi would outscore the Ice Flyers 3-1 in the second period with Richard and Bartholomy finding the back of the net. Pensacola, however, kept battling back and Tanner Shultz and Matt Whitehead found Kevin Kozlowski for a goal with 8:20 remaining in the second. Both Shultz, Whitehead and Liscomb would all end up with three point nights this evening.

The 3rd period started off quickly for the Surge as Richard again found the back of the net slipping one past Ice Flyers' Tender Tommy Lee under a minute in. However, Brett Liscomb and Dan Erhman would connect with Team Captain Mark Hinz in the eighth minute to pull within one. The Surge, however, were not ready to concede just yet when Matt Zultek and Rusty Masters connected for a goal putting, what they were sure to think of was nail in the coffin going up 5-3 with under five minutes to play. The Ice Flyers had not quit, however, and Matt Whitehead and Kevin Kozlowski both found the back of the net to send the game into overtime.

Neither team could find the back of the net during the three on three overtime period. Per SPHL rules, a shoot-out would be used to determine the victor. Mississippi would start things off with Beeman missing. Brett Liscomb, however, slipped the puck past McNulty. Tommy Lee would deny Matt Zultek another point while Kyle Crawford would connect with the back of the net. Richard would go top shelf on Lee and was able to finally put the Surge up in lights during the shoot-out. Ultimately, it was too little too late as Chris Wilson would sneak one by and Cassells would miss on a must have shot for Mississippi.

Tommy Lee improved to 6-1 on the season and stopped 32 of Mississippi's 37 shots. McNulty falls to 2-2 on the season and was able to knock away 33 of the Ice Flyers' 38 shots. Pensacola went 2-8 on Power Plays and Mississippi capitalized on 3 of their 7 chances.

The Ice Flyers will rest the next few days before returning to The Hangar again for Education Appreciation Night presented by Cox Communications on December 30th taking on the Columbus Cottonmouths.
