Ice Flyers Down Knoxville Ice Bears 5-2

KNOXVILLE, TN - T he Pensacola Ice Flyers continued their winning ways with a strong 5-2 victory over the Knoxville Ice Bears at the Knoxville Civic Auditorium and Coliseum on Friday night.

Things were fairly quiet through the beginning of the first period until Knoxville's David Segal and Ice Flyers newcomer Patrick Schafer dropped the mitts 9:14 into the game. A few minutes later, the Ice Flyers were the first on the scoreboard when Joe Caveney scored an unassisted tally at the 12:12 mark.

The Ice Flyers' Paul Rodrigues took a penalty for Roughing at the close of the first period and the Ice Bears began the second period with a full two minute power play. Ben Souders capitalized 1:25 into the man advantage to tie the game up at one apiece. Almost seven minutes later, the Ice Flyers netted a power play goal of their own to regain the lead. Paul Rodrigues scored his first goal of the season with Mitchell Good and Joe Caveney picking up the assists.

The Ice Flyers got some offensive help from their defensemen when Donnie Harris scored with 4:43 left in the second. Fellow defenseman Shaun Arvai had the secondary assist while Patrick Schafer had the primary. The Ice Flyers pushed their lead to 4-1 when, with Arvai in the box for Holding, Mitchell Good scored a shorthanded goal with just 1:17 remaining in the period. Joe Caveney and Zach Josepher had the helpers on the goal.

The Ice Flyers weren't content to sit back and guard the lead. They came out looking for more goals and they got one as Joe Caveney scored his second goal of the night, this one on the power play. Mitchell Good and Paul Rodrigues had the assists. Knoxville scored their second power play goal of the game as Phil Bronner cut the Ice Flyers' lead down to 5-2 with 6:25 remaining. Bronner's goal proved to be the final tally for either team as the game ended a 5-2 win for the Ice Flyers.

Johnny Griggs started the game and was replaced at the start of the second by Peter Di Salvo. Combined they stopped 20 of Knoxville's 22 shots. Di Salvo was credited with the win.

Joe Caveney was named the first star of the game while Mitchell Good and Paul Rodrigues were second and third respectively.

The Ice Flyers play tomorrow night at home against the Louisiana IceGators at 7:05 p.m. Central.
