Bloomington Thunder News Release
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Bloomington Thunder earned their first win of the season behind two goals and an assist from Kevin Walrod and a penalty-filled final period for a 4-0 triumph over the Fayetteville FireAntz on Friday night at Crown Coliseum.
After a scoreless first period, the scoring began on a fluke play with 17:29 remaining in the middle chapter as Kevin Walrod centered a pass from behind the net that went off the skate of FireAntz defender Zach Carriveau at the right post and into the net. The Thunder increased the advantage to 2-0 with 13:34 left in the second period on the power play when a deflected pass landed on Darick Ste. Marie's stick in full stride and he converted top shelf. Bloomington pushed the lead to 3-0 with 10:27 remaining as William Lacasse scored an unassisted breakaway on another top shelf shot. Walrod collected his second goal of the game on a give-and-go breakaway with Matt Puntereri with 3:04 remaining before the second intermission to increase the Thunder lead to 4-0.
Altercations marred the third period with three players ejected on each side, including FireAntz goalie Dan Dunn and Thunder netminder Max Strang after they exchanged blows. The teams combined for 155 penalty minutes, 89 against the hosts with 66 imposed against the Thunder.
The Thunder and FireAntz rematch on Saturday at 6:05 p.m. Central at Crown Coliseum with 5:45 p.m. pre-game on WJBC.com and on subscription video at America One with broadcast links on the home page of www.bloomingtonthunder.com. Fans are also invited to gather at Six Strings at 525 N. Center St. in downtown Bloomington to watch all road games. The Thunder return home for the next two Fridays and Saturdays. Group and multi-game discount packages are available by calling 309-434-2980. More information is available on the Thunder via the team web site as well as Facebook and Twitter (BLMThunder).
Juniors fall: The Bloomington Junior Blaze scored the game's first two goals just 19 seconds apart on tallies by Duncan Irvine and Jorey Skelton, but the Traverse City Hounds bounced back and took a 3-2 win in Midwest Junior Hockey League action on Friday afternoon at U.S. Cellular Coliseum. The teams continue their weekend series at the Coliseum on Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at 11 a.m.
