PENSACOLA, FL - The Pensacola Ice Flyers played the Bloomington Thunder for the first time ever and came away with a 3-2 overtime victory in the first night of a back-to-back series with the Thunder.

The first period ended up being a scoreless affair as Bloomington's Max Strang and the Ice Flyers' Ross MacKinnon stood tall in their creases. Pensacola outshot the Thunder 11-10 in the opening period.

The second period continued to be scoreless until Bloomington's Travis Granbois scored on a shorthanded breakaway to give the Thunder the 1-0 lead with 7:20 remaining in the period. The score stood at 1-0 Bloomington until only 52.6 seconds remained in frame. Joe Caveney put the puck behind Strang after taking a beautiful backhanded pass from Corey Banfield. Malcolm Lyles had the other assist on the tying goal.

Podge Turnbull broke the 1-1 tie less than five minutes into the third when he forced the puck in from the right of Strang. Caveney had the only assist on the goal. Bloomington's Nic Polaski scored unassisted 8:36 into the third to tie the game again.

The game headed to overtime tied at two and it took less than a minute for the tie to be broken. Turnbull skated down the left wing, with Shaun Arvai trailing and Banfield on the right wing. Turnbull passed to Arvai who then passed it right back to Turnbull before Turnbull fired it past Strang's right shoulder. Arvai had the only assist on the game-winning goal.

Ross MacKinnon stopped 25 of Bloomington's 27 shots and picked up his ninth win in an Ice Flyers' jersey this season. Caveney was named the second star and Turnbull was named the first star for his two-goal performance.

The Ice Flyers' next game is tomorrow night as they take on the Bloomington Thunder again. It will be Military Appreciation Night and puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. All active duty/retired military members and their families can purchase a $10 Center Ice ticket at the Box Office by showing their Military ID.
