Rivermen Sign Former Bloomington D-Man Kory Helowka

Peoria Rivermen head coach Jean-Guy Trudel has announced that former Bloomington Thunder defenseman Kory Helowka has been signed to an SPHL contract with Peoria. In addition, stay-home defenseman Jarrett Rush has been returned on loan from the Kalamazoo Wings (ECHL). Both are expected to be in the lineup this weekend at Knoxville.
Helowka, 27, notched two points (1g, 1a) and 32 penalty minutes in 23 games for the Thunder this season - 11 of those contests against the Rivermen. He was released for a second time this season on January 23. Last year, the Newmarket, Ontario native made 23 appearances for the Mississippi RiverKings and produced six points (1g, 5a) and four penalty minutes. He also skated in three playoff games, where he registered one assist.
The 6'0, 195-pounder began his pro career during the 2011-12 season in three games with the now defunct Augusta RiverHawks. Helowka also played 11 games for the Brooklyn Aviators in the Federal Hockey League.
Rush, 28, made six appearances for ECHL Kalamazoo this season and collected two penalty minutes. Prior to his promotion, the former Rivermen captain played 27 games for Peoria and recorded six points (1g, 5a) along with 43 penalty minutes. He will serve as an alternate captain this weekend for the Rivermen, and for the foreseeable future.
A fourth-year pro, Rush spent the majority of last season in the ECHL between Elmira, Orlando, South Carolina and Colorado. Overall, the 6'5, 225-pound defenseman has played 84 regular season games in the ECHL and an additional 38 games in the SPHL. Prior to turning pro, the Pennington, New Jersey native spent three seasons at Curry College in Milton, Massachusetts, where he was coached by Rob Davies, a former winger on Peoria's inaugural IHL team in 1982-83.
Peoria hits the road this weekend with a Friday-Saturday doubleheader against the Knoxville Ice Bears in Knoxville, Tennessee.
