Ice Flyers Come Up Short In A Shootout Loss

February 3, 2012 - SPHL (SPHL)
Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release

The Pensacola Ice Flyers continued their road trip of 4 games in 5 nights. After winning the first 2 games, they headed to Huntsville to take on the Havoc but could not come away with the victory, losing in a shootout 4-3.

Andrew Howes returned to the Ice Flyers' lineup after a few weeks and it did not take long for him to have an impact. 4:17 into the game, Howes scored his 4th goal in just 6 games played. Huntsville evened the score at the 9:52 mark when Justin Fox beat Ice Flyers' goalie Corey Milan. 6 minutes later, Mike Carter extended his point streak to 5 games, scoring off a beautiful pass from Chris Wilson.

Glenn Detulleo of the Havoc tied the game at 2 as Dennis Sicard and Kyle Crawford set him up for the lone goal of the second. Pensacola's Andrew Harrison scored his 15th of the season on a blast that blew by Havoc goalie Matt Hache. But once again, Huntsville fought back for the third time to tie up the score. The Havoc's leading scorer, Ryan Kretzer, scored with just under 8 minutes remaining.

The game went into overtime and both teams had amazing chances to take the 2 points. Huntsville broke down the ice 2 on 1, but the Havoc player put the puck directly back through the crease, missing the open net after receiving the pass. The Ice Flyers then had a flurry of chances immediately after Huntsville's missed opportunity. Just as Wilson found the loose puck and put it in the open net, the ref loss sight of the puck and blew the whistle, thus disallowing the goal.

5 minutes of overtime solved nothing and the game went into a shootout. Jordan Chong was the only Ice Flyer that was able to beat the Havoc's goalie. Kretzer and Fox both scored for Huntsville, winning the shootout and taking the 2 points.

Pensacola comes away with a single point, getting 5 of 6 available points in their first 3 games of the road trip. They face the Havoc once again Saturday night to conclude the demanding road trip.
