Mississippi Surge News Release

The Mississippi Surge saw its four game winning streak come to an end in a 3-1 loss to the Louisiana IceGators Friday night at Louisiana. The win for Louisiana also ended a four game winless streak for the IceGators.

Louisiana was able to solve Surge goaltender Kiefer Smiley--who earlier in the day was named the Southern Professional Hockey League's SBK Player of the Month for January--with a goal in each period. Tyler Lyon opened the scoring for Louisiana at 4:39 of the first period.

Shawn Skelly tied the game for the Surge five minutes into the second period with a power play goal. It was Skelly's second goal in two straight games for the Surge, as he had scored in Thursday's 4-1 win over Columbus. The tie lasted only 1:44 until Robert Short put Louisiana back on top.

Phil Crea scored at 11:46 of the third period to complete the scoring for Louisiana. The Surge, playing its third game in four nights, got outshot in the game, 27-20.

Mississippi is off until Friday when the Surge hosts the Pensacola Ice Flyers. That night the Surge will be wearing special Mardi Gras jerseys that will be auctioned after the game. It will also be a Family Four Pack night, with the Surge offering four tickets, four hot dogs, four soft drinks and a large tub of popcorn for only 60 dollars.
