Surge Netminder Kiefer Smiley Named SBK Player of the Month

CHARLOTTE, NC (February 3, 2012) - The Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) today announced goaltender Kiefer Smiley of the Mississippi Surge has been selected as the SBK Player of the Month for January.

Smiley went 6-2-1 for the month, posting a goals against average of 2.88 and a save percentage of .897 as the Surge recorded a league-high 16 points in January (7-2-2).

Behind Smiley's 27 saves, Mississippi captured a 6-5 win over Knoxville on January 5, becoming the first road team to win a game in Knoxville this season and ending the Ice Bears' 12-game home winning streak. Smiley recorded a January-best 38 saves on January 22, including 13 in the third period, as the Surge defeated Fayetteville 5-2. The Duncan, British Columbia native closed out the month with three consecutive wins, stopping 81 of 86 total shots, as the Surge climbed to fifth place in the SPHL standings.

Smiley currently ranks among the top-five goaltenders in several categories, including wins (second - 12) and goals against average (fifth - 2.83). Before joining the Surge for his first professional season, Smiley spent the last two years stopping pucks for the Trail Smoke Eaters of the BCHL where he won 36 games.
