Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release
PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Pensacola Ice Flyers (12-6-1) used a two-goal performance by captain Adam Pawlick to help guide the team to a 3-2 shootout win over the league leading Mississippi RiverKings (13-4-3).
Mississippi opened the scoring just past the halfway mark as former Ice Flyer Leo Thomas beat John McLean 10:03 into the first. The RiverKings doubled their lead when Devin Mantha scoring on a shot the redirected off of McLean's glove with 1:37 left in the opening frame.
After playing a sluggish first period and the majority of second, the Ice Flyers turned it on and got began the comeback thanks to a ridiculous goal by Adam Pawlick. He skated into the zone and used some impressive stick work to skate around the defense and get Mississippi goalie Garrett Sheehan to commit low before putting the puck in the back of the net. Cody Dion and Phil Tesoriero picked up the helpers on the goal that came with 4:59 remaining in the second period.
The Ice Flyers continued to put the pressure on and dominated the third period, outshooting the RiverKings 21-3 in the period. Pawlick tied the game with his second of the game when he came crashing down the slot and redirected a pass from the right wing boards off of the stick of Joe Caveney. The goal came 2:29 into the third period and Jeremy Gates picked up the secondary assist.
With the score tied at two after the end of regulation and a five-minute sudden death overtime period, the teams went to a shootout and even that required extra rounds. Caveney scored in the first round of the shootout then Mississippi's Mantha tied it in the fourth. Following a miss in the sixth round by Mississippi's Charles Mosely, Corey Banfield buried the puck past Sheehan to secure the victory.
McLean stopped 27 of Mississippi's 29 shots and five of the six shooters in the shootout to get his fourth win of the season. Gates was named the third star while Pawlick was second and Banfield was the number one star.
The Ice Flyers will be back in action tomorrow as they head to Columbus, Ga. to take on the Columbus Cottonmouths for a 3 p.m. Central puck drop.
