Mississippi RiverKings News Release

PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Mississippi RiverKings (13-4-3) took a two-goal lead and Garrett Sheehan made 45 saves, but they could not hold on as they fell 3-2 in a shootout on Saturday night against the Pensacola Ice Flyers (12-6-1).

The RiverKings jumped out to an early lead in the first period. Leo Thomas put the visitors on top with his fifth goal of the season as he beat Ice Flyer netminder John McLean low 10:03 into the first to give the RiverKings a 1-0 lead. Eight minutes later, Devin Mantha's wrist shot found the top right corner over the glove of McLean and the RiverKings lead 2-0 going into the second period.

In the second, the Ice Flyers got on the board. Adam Pawlick took a Cody Dion pass and beat Garrett Sheehan to cut the RiverKings lead to 2-1 at the 15:01 mark of the second. The goal snapped Sheehan's shutout streak at 100:01 to start his professional career.

The Ice Flyers tied the game in the third. Pawlick tallied his second goal of the game as he redirected Joe Caveney's pass past Sheehan just 2:30 into the final frame of regulation.

After a wide-open, but ultimately scoreless overtime, the teams headed to a shootout. After five rounds, only Pawlick scored for Pensacola and Mantha for the RiverKings to force sudden death. After McLean stopped Charlie Mosey, Corey Banfield beat Sheehan to give the Ice Flyers the 3-2 win.

Sheehan (0-0-2) took the loss after stopping 45 of 47 shots against. McLean (4-0-0) stayed undefeated after turning aside 27 of 29 shots. The RiverKings were held without a goal on five power play opportunities and Pensacola was scoreless on three man-advantage opportunities.

The RiverKings return to Concorde Career College Ice at the Landers Center on Sunday, December 27 at 3:05 p.m. for the team's first Pay What You Can Night. All seats start at a minimum $2 anywhere in the building. Tickets will go on sale tomorrow at noon at the Landers Center and all orders will be cash only at the Nissan Entrance of the Landers Center.
