Ice Flyers Beat Augusta in OT

For the second time in two weeks, the Ice Flyers came into a game with the #1 team in the SPHL and came out with a 5-4 OT win.

The Ice Flyers opened up the scoring when the picked up a turnover by Augusta and skated in on 3-on-2 breakaway. Ryan Corry took a pass from Jordan Chong and put it behind the RiverHawks' Peter Skoggard. Chris Wilson picked up the second assist on the goal. Neil Graham got Augusta on the board and tied up the game via a power play goal with 3:38 left in the period.

The second period was a back and forth affair and it came and went with no score. The most action during the period came when Jordan Chong checked a RiverHawks' player into the boards behind the Augusta bench. Justin MacDonald took exception to the hit and tried to drag Chong into a fight but Jordan was having none of it and MacDonald was assessed a minor for roughing.

The scoring blew up in the third period and it began with Chris Wilson getting his stick on a centering pass from Mike Carter and sliding it into the net. Ryan Corry got the other assist. Matt Auffrey tied it up for Augusta less than 4 minutes later. Everything was all quiet for 9 minutes before Jason Dolgy took a pass from Shane Ferguson and gave the Ice Flyers they 3-2 lead. Referee Robert Lukkason award Augusta's Matt Auffrey a penalty shot which he converted to tie the game yet again. Just a minute and a half later Augusta's Jesse Echternach redirected a shot from the blue line and gave the RiverHawks a 4-3 lead with just 2:04 left. The Ice Flyers were not daunted at all as Chris Wilson netted his second goal of the game with Jordan Chong and Donnie Harris picking up the assists.

The third ended tied at four so the teams headed to a 5-minute 3-on-3 overtime period. Both teams had their chances but it was the Ice Flyers who came out on top when Donnie Harris picked up his 2nd tally of the game by flying up the left wing boards on a breakaway. Mike Carter got his second assist on the goal's only helper.

Jeff Rose stopped 26 of the 30 shots he faced and picked up his first win with the Ice Flyers in his first stop for the team. For their contributions, Ryan Corry was named the 3rd star of the game, Chris Wilson the 2nd star, and with the game winning goal Donnie Harris was the 1st star.
