Knoxville Ice Bears News Release

KNOXVILLE, TN - The Knoxville Ice Bears were defeated 5-1 in a battle against the Columbus Cottonmouths in front of a crowd of 4,418 at the Knoxville Civic Coliseum.

The first period started off fast and physical with two Columbus goals in the first eight minutes of the game. The first Columbus goal was scored by Sam Bowles off an initial save by Ice Bears goalie Jesse Kallechy. Former Ice Bear Derek Pallardy notched the visitor's second goal as he wrapped the puck around an outstretched Kallechy.

Columbus, with the third ranked power play, scored their third goal of the game with the man advantage at 16:33 of the first period. Things heated up on the ice when Ice Bears forward Brett Valliquette took on Columbus' Daniel Amesbury in an attempt to energize his team. Both teams remained even strength when Ice Bears forward Emery Olauson scored the Ice Bears only goal of the game. With assists from Berkley Scott and Kevin Swider, Olauson put Cottonmouths goalie, Ian Vigier, on his stomach trying to stop the puck from in front of the net. The first period ended with the Ice Bears down by two goals.

The second period was off to a similar start with a breakaway goal for Columbus scored by Sam Bowles just 4:51 into the period. Knoxville found their legs after the long week off and managed to kill off three consecutive Cottonmouth power plays but could not solve Cottonmouth goaltender Vigier.

Columbus scored their second power play goal of the game at 2:21 of the third period increasing their lead to four goals. With the goal scoring complete the penalties started to mount. There were 13 offenses by both teams, doubling the total from the previous two periods.

The same two teams will face off again in Columbus to complete the home at home series for the weekend.

Join the Ice Bears on January 27th at 7:30 pm as Knoxville hosts the Fayetteville FireAntz for the return of Pink in the Rink. The Ice Bears will don special pink jerseys that will be auctioned off after the game - a portion of the proceeds from the jerseys will benefit Knoxville Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
