Mississippi Surge News Release
Shawn Skelly's unassisted goal with just 2:02 left to play lifted the Mississippi Surge to a literally hard fought 5-4 win in Fayetteville Friday night, over the FireAntz.
The game featured a brawl which saw Surge goaltender Kiefer Smiley square off with Fayetteville goalie Mike Brown midway through the second period. That fracas was was the main reason the teams combined for 102 penalty minutes, the most of any game this season for the Surge.
Skelly's goal capped a back and forth game, which saw each team strike quickly after the other team had scored. Surge leading scorer Mark Versteeg-Lytwyn opened the scoring with the club's first shorthanded goal of the year with only 32 seconds left in the first period. But Fayetteville answered back, as the power play carried over into the second period, and Mike Forgie tied it just 26 seconds into the period.
Forgie wound up with two goals on the game, as did the Surge's Rob Campbell. Four the Surge's five goals were credited as unassisted goals. Nick Guran had the other Surge goal, while Matt Smyth and Jesse Biduke also scored for Fayetteville.
The same two teams square off Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. Central time in Fayetteville. The Surge will return home Tuesday to host Pensacola at 7:05 p.m. That will be Beau Rivage $5 fun night with tickets available for only $5 dollars courtesy of the Beau Rivage Casino and Resort.
