Ice Dogs Agree To Terms With Veteran Defenseman

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Ice Dogs Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations, Malcolm Cameron, announced today he has agreed to terms with veteran defenseman, Mike Vellinga. As per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Vellinga, a 6-2, 212-pound defenseman from Chatham, Ontario was originally drafted in the 7th round (184th overall) by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft. He has spent time in the AHL, playing for Saint John, San Antonio and Hamilton, the new AHL affiliate of the Ice Dogs. Last year he played 64 games for the Laredo Bucks of the CHL, scoring 5 goals, 29 assists and 100 penalty minutes while helping them win the championship. Vellinga has played in 305 ECHL games, spending three seasons with the Johnstown Chiefs and two with the Dayton Bombers, amassing 18 goals, 91 assists and 533 penalty minutes.

"Mike is a big, strong, mobile defenseman and a great special teams player", said Cameron. "He is an outstanding leader and a good quality individual."

In addition to winning the championship in Laredo last season, Vellinga went to the Kelly Cup Finals with Dayton during the 2001-2002 season. He was also a teammate of goaltender Chris Madden with the Guelph Storm of the OHL, when they went to the Memorial Cup Finals in 1998. During the 2000-2001 season in Johnstown, he was named to the Northern Conference All-Star Team.
