ICE Carve out Win over Blades in Saskatoon

November 2, 2018 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Saskatoon Blades News Release

Saskatoon, SK - The Saskatoon Blades fell short Thursday night 4-2 to the visiting Kootenay ICE. Saskatoon now slips to 9-6-2-0 on the year and will look to rebound tomorrow night as they travel to Moose Jaw to take on the Warriors.

The Blades opened the scoring 11:45 into the first frame. Kristian Roykas-Marthinsen scored his 6th of the season off of a beautiful feed from Tristen Robins behind the net. The ICE were not letting the Blades steal all the energy as Nick Bowman evened the game only 46 seconds later. There was lots of physicality in the first period, which ended in a 1-1 tie.

The second period did not see a puck cross the goal line until 15 seconds remaining when Gary Haden tapped the puck past the ICE netminder Duncan McGovern for his 4th of the season. Josh Paterson and Brandon Schuldhaus picked up assists on the play. This gave the Blades a 2-1 lead going into the second intermission and 27-17 advantage on the shot clock.

The third period saw the ICE even things up 6:02 into the frame when the Blades misplayed the puck behind their net. The mistake opened up the slot for Brad Ginnell, who put it by Maier for his 4th of the year. The ICE then responded to their own goal only 3:30 later when Jaeger White beat Maier for his 9th of the season. It was then Peyton Krebs who sprinkled some salt on the wound to make it a 4-2 game on his 6th of the season with only 64 seconds remaining in the game.

The Blades went 0/1 on the power play and the ICE went 0/2. Face-offs were in Kootenay's favour tonight as they won 54%. The Blades will now head out on a 4-game road trip which includes stops in Moose Jaw and Regina this weekend. Next weekend the Blades will travel west with stops in Medicine Hat and Cranbrook. The blue & gold will be back at home on November 13th to host the Medicine Hat Tigers.
