PREVIOUS GAME - Winterhawks 2 vs. Blazers 5: The Winterhawks could not find enough offense on Sunday night to capture a win against Kamloops. They fall at home in 5-2 fashion.
Special teams play got its work in the first period, but all five power play chances came and went without a goal. Blazers goaltender Dylan Garand made a tough save on a two-on-one shorthanded rush against Cody Glass and Lane Gilliss to help keep the game scoreless.
Kamloops was able to capitalize in the second. Josh Pillar takes a puck in the corner and fires it home for his second of the season and five minutes later, Kobe Mohr increases the lead on a transitional rush.
The third period began with a power play goal from the Blazers, but Cody Glass and the Winterhawks responded with a power play goal of their own a few seconds later. Glass banked a hard shot off a skate to register his fifth goal of the year.
Portland tried to muscle back in the game, but the Blazers tacked on a few more insurance markers to win the game 5-2. Ryan Hughes netted a 6-on-4 power play goal in the late stages of the contest.
Garand secures his first Western Hockey League victory, stopping 32 shots to conclude the weekend.
TODAY'S OPPONENT:
The Victoria Royals come to town for a pair of games and they seek double digit wins on Friday night. Friday's game at the Moda Center will represent the first of four regular season meetings between the two Western Conference teams.
Entering the night, Victoria holds its spot in the CHL Top Ten leader board, ranking seventh in back-t0-back weeks. The Winterhawks are looking for a rebound performance as they face a team that has lost three of its last five games.
After starting the 2018-19 season with seven straight wins, the Royals have cooled off a touch. They have offensive talent on Kaid Oliver's (9-7-16) line. The 18 year old from White Rock, BC is eligible for the NHL Draft this summer. Goaltender Griffen Outhouse has been a bright spot for the Royals playing in his final year of juniors. Earning the number one role for his third consecutive season, Outhouse has posted some of the best goaltending numbers in the league with eight wins, a 1.89 goals against average and .942 save percentage.
Tonight, the Winterhawks will find out how battle tested their Canadian foe truly is. It is only the Royals second bus trip of the season and first time since October 6. The Royals do have an unblemished record of 2-0-0-0 on the road, but the Hawks have been a historically good team at home.
FRED MEYER TURKEY SHOOT:
Following tonight's game, ladies 18 years and older will have the chance to come out onto the ice and shoot a puck in the net to win a free turkey dinner from Fred Meyer. Also, prizes will be given away from Standard TV & Appliance.
The Winterhawks have teamed up with Fred Meyer this season with the hopes of ending hunger in Portland. Learn more at winterhawks.com/fredmeyer.
