Knoxville Ice Bears News Release
Knoxville, TN - Garrett Vermeersch scored two power play goals, Brian Billet made 34 saves and the Knoxville Ice Bears completed a three-game sweep of the Fayetteville FireAntz with a 4-1 win on Sunday.
The Ice Bears have won eight straight at home and nine of their last 11 overall. They finish the regular season series against Fayetteville with a 6-3 record and having won the last four, including the first two games of the weekend on Thursday and Friday.
Knoxville struck first on its second power play of the opening period when Vermeersch fired a blast from the left circle over the shoulder of Parker Van Buskirk. The Ice Bears scored a power play goal in each of the three meetings with Fayetteville during this weekend series.
The Ice Bears extended the league in the second when Trevor Hertz fed the puck from behind the goal line through the right circle to set up Dennis Sicard for a one-timer that beat Van Buskirk five-hole.
Less than two minutes later Van Buskirk played a puck behind his own net that came out on the left side in front of the crease. The goalie was able to get back in front of the net to stop a backhand from Mark Pustin, but Doug Reid scored on the rebound, leading to Van Buskirk being pulled in favor of backup Dustin Carlson.
Vermeersch scored his second of the day with another one-timer from the top of the left circle at 8:56 of the third. The FireAntz spoiled Billet's shutout bid with a goal from Steven Hoshaw at 11:04.
