Peoria Rivermen News Release
Peoria, IL - The Peoria Rivermen scored three times in the second period and David Jacobson made 53 saves to earn his first professional shutout as Peoria topped the Pensacola Ice Flyers 3-0 Sunday afternoon. The win, Peoria's fifth in its last six games, improves their lead to 14 points over the rest of the SPHL.
The first period was scoreless and Peoria got on the board early in the second. At 2:00 of the second period Pensacola's Charlie Adams was issued a two-minute minor for tripping to break up a Steve Morra drive to the net, and 20 seconds later the Rivermen cashed in on the powerplay. Walker Wintoneak took the puck and passed to Adam Stuart along the Ice Flyers' goal line, where Stuart buried a shot behind the back of Pensacola goaltender Brent Troyan and under the crossbar to make it 1-0.
At 3:16 of the second, just 54 seconds after Stuart's goal, Pensacola winger Corey Banfield was taken down going to the net, and was awarded a penalty shot. The right-handed shooter tried to slow down and shoot on his forehand side where he was denied by Jacobson's right pad to keep the score 1-0.
Peoria doubled their lead with another power-play goal near the midway point of the game. At 8:09 of the second period, Brandon Blair was called for cross checking, and at 9:45 Jack Callahan's pass from the right circle found Mike Gurtler on the back door, where Gurtler buried the puck past Troyan to make it 2-0. The Peoria lead swelled to 3-0 at 14:22 of the second when Mark Gurtler skated into the right wing, picked up the puck, and backhanded it to the Pensacola crease, where it tumbled over Troyan and into the net for eventual final score, 3-0.
Jacobson stopped all 53 shots he faced in goal to earn his first pro shutout as a professional, improving his SPHL record to 9-6-0 this season, 9-2-0 as a member of the Rivermen. The win is Jacobson's first since February 6 in Fayetteville, and sets new career highs in saves and shots faced.
