Knoxville Ice Bears News Release
KNOXVILLE, TN - Knoxville returned to home ice tonight to face the Fayetteville FireAntz. A two goal performance from David Segal and expert net work from Bryan Hince secured the Ice Bears their 9th straight home win of their 10th Anniversary Season. A crowd of 4,064 watched as Knoxville defeated the FireAntz 4-2.
Fayetteville beat the Ice Bears to the scoreboard 5:26 into the first period to take an early lead. Segal tied the game before the end of the period with a slap shot straight past Fayetteville goalie Mike Brown. Dan Bremner and Kyle VanderMale assisted Knoxville's first goal. The period ended with both teams tied at 1.
Knoxville was quick to take the lead in the second period. At the 3:19 minute mark Brett Valliquette shot a power play goal to bring Knoxville up 2-1. Ricky Helmbrecht and Eric Satim were credited with the assist.
Just 21 seconds later, Segal nailed his second goal of the night. The puck took a funny bounce off the boards and FireAntz goalie Brown lost sight of it and Segal fired into a wide open net. VanderMale and Mike Carpenter assisted the goal.
Knoxville scored their third unanswered goal less than two minutes later. The Ice Bears were back on the power play immediately following Segal's goal. Berkley Scott and Mark Van Vliet fed the puck to streaking Eric Slais who buried it for a 4-1 lead.
While the intermission activity provided entertaining fisticuffs for Guaranteed Fight Night, Segal decided to drop his gloves with Kyle McNeil for the first bout of the game. Four minutes later, Valliquette tangled with Fayetteville's Tanner Hlookoff.
The second period ended with the Ice Bears leading 4-1 on the scoreboard and 24-20 in shots on goal after being outshot by the FireAntz 10- 4 in the first period.
Fayetteville scored the only goal of the third period just after Jason Ford returned to the ice to end their power play. With the period winding down, Fayetteville pulled their goalie to skate an extra man on the ice, but it wasn't enough to overpower Knoxville. The Ice Bears remain undefeated at home.
The Ice Bears next home game is Thursday, Dec. 22 against the Augusta RiverHawks. The Ice Bears will be awarding $1,000 to the fan with the Ugly Christmas Sweater. Come show your Christmas spirit and cheer on the Ice Bears. The puck drops 7:30.
