RiverHawks Pay Tribute to JD Paugh in 4-2 Win

December 17, 2011 - SPHL (SPHL)
Augusta RiverHawks News Release

The Augusta RiverHawks along with its fans gave an emotional tribute to fallen Richmond County Sheriff's Deputy JD Paugh Saturday night before they won their sixth in a row, 4-2 over the Mississippi RiverKings.

It was the RiverHawks' second win in as many nights over the RiverKings, who played back to back solid games, but were unable to overcome the Southern Professional Hockey League's top team. Tonight, however, the RiverHawks' offensive attack was much stronger, firing 37 shots on goal.

RiverHawks' Captain Matt Auffrey was the star once again for the home team, scoring two goals including the game winner. It was Auffrey's sixth straight game with a goal, scoring seven goals over that span. He also has now picked up points in his past ten games.

RiverHawks' forward Dustin Cloutier became the team's leading scorer in the game, picking up an assist in the second period. The helper extends his points-scored streak to 16 games, the longest in the SPHL this season.

The RiverKings got the jump on the RiverHawks with an early goal on the power play, which was a good sign as Mississippi has struggled so far this season with the man advantage. However, any positive momentum generated with the goal was negated on their very next power play when RiverHawks' forward Aaron McGill scored on a breakaway opportunity while short-handed.

Both teams received solid goaltending performances. RiverKings' net-minder Scott Darling played extremely well in a losing cause, making 34 saves including several of the highlight-reel variety. At the other end of the ice Jon Olthuis picked up his second win in a row and improved his record this season to five wins compared to just one loss with a 30-save effort.

The RiverHawks wore specially-designed jerseys in tribute to JD Paugh. Following the game the jerseys were auctioned off with the proceeds being donated to JD's son Brandon's education fund. Additionally, the RiverHawks donated $2 from every ticket sold to the game to the education fund. Global Spectrum also donated a dollar from every ticket.

The RiverHawks head on the road for four straight games before returning to action on Phoenix Refrigeration Ice at the James Brown Arena Friday, December 30th as they play the Fayetteville FireAntz. The puck drops at 7:35pm. Tickets for the game are available through the RiverHawks' office and the James Brown Arena box office. Additional information on the Team, tickets, and schedule are available on the RiverHawks' home on the web, www.augustariverhawks.com or by calling 706-993-2645. Fans can catch every road game at the Official Watch Party at Somewhere in Augusta at 2820 Washington Road.
