Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release
The Pensacola Ice Flyers gave their fans a lot to cheer about as their complete team effort Friday night against Columbus finished back-to-back victories, winning 3-0. The shutout performance from Ice Flyers' netminder, Steve Christie, would be his second in 5 games, while improving his record to 4-1.
After taking two points the night before against Louisiana in a shootout, the Ice Flyers returned home to The Hangar and extended their home game winning streak to 4 games.
There was a great pace and intensity to the game right off the start in their 5th meeting so far this season. Ice Flyers' captain, Dan Buccella, scored his 7th goal of the season as he opened the scoring, driving the net and burying a rebound. Ryan Salvis and Tyler Soehner added helpers on the opening tally. The first would end with the Ice Flyers up 1-0 and with Columbus edging Pensacola in shots, 10-8.
Throughout the second, both teams exchanged powerplay opportunities but neither team was able to take advantage of the man advantage. In another play that saw the Ice Flyers crash the net, Jordan Chong scored his 7th of the season as well, with Adam Kuhn and Soehner drawing the assists. The second period would end with a tilt as Kuhn squared off with Daniel Amesbury, driving the intensity up in the game and in The Hangar. The Ice Flyers would take the 2-0 lead into the third and more than double their opponents in shots in the second, 15-7.
The Ice Flyers would bring the 2800 fans in attendance to their feet in the third frame. Mike Carter would score his 7th of the season at the halfway mark as Salvis recorded his second assist of the night. A few minutes later, Kuhn would drop the mitts again as he took on David Cianfrini this team. The next shift, Ice Flyer Andrew Harrison would have his turn at the Cottonmouths' Amesbury. Then as the final horn sounded, Christie's second shutout was in the books, the Ice Flyers would take 4 of 4 points this weekend, and Buccella would send the fans home excited with even more to talk about with a fight against Amesbury. Columbus edged Pensacola in shots in the third, 10-7, but the Ice Flyers outshot the Cottonmouths in shots for the game, 30-27.
Christie's shutout victory would earn him the night's first star; Buccella would be named the second star, and Soehner the third.
The Ice Flyers have the exact same schedule this upcoming week; they travel to Louisiana Thursday, and are back at the Civic Center on Friday against Columbus. It's Giveaway Night at The Hangar on Friday. Fans will be able to go home with some free prizes.
