Game Day Notes Vs. Columbus

December 17, 2011 - SPHL (SPHL)
Mississippi Surge News Release

Back Home Again:The Mississippi Surge return home to the Coast coliseum tonight for the first time since November 26th, hosting the Columbus Cottonmouths.

Records: The Surge is 8-9-0 for 16 points tied for sixth.

Columbus is 10-6-3 for 23 points in third place.

Season Series:This is the fourth of seven meetings between the two teams, and the third straight Saturday night they have faced each other. All three previous meetings have been in Columbus with the Surge winning twice by the score of 4-3, with one of those wins coming in a shootout. Columbus won the last match up between the two teams, 5-2.

Recent Action: That game last Saturday night was the most recent game for the Surge. The final goal was scored into an empty net. In spite of the loss, the Surge did manage a season high 41 shots on goal in that game. Columbus is coming off a 3-0 loss in Pensacola last night. It was the first time this season Columbus has not scored at least two goals in a game. That leaves the Surge as the only team in the SPHL that has scored at least two goals in each game it's played this season.

Bears In The Air: Tonight the Surge holds its annual Teddy Bear Toss presented by Teddy Bear Restoration and Carpet Cleaning. After the Surge scores its first goal, fans will toss teddy bears onto the ice, which will then be donated to various agencies for distribution this Christmas season.

Seeing Familiar Faces:The Surge has added left winger Matt Kinnunen to its roster. He is familiar with Columbus having played 52 games there last season. He will be number 10 tonight.

Never Enough Nicks: Center Nicolas Petriello has also joined the Surge. He will be number nine and joins other Nicks (and Nicholas) on the Surge roster, Eno, Klaren, Kuqali, and Guran.

Next Up: The Surge will be home again next Friday night hosting the Huntsville Havoc at 7:05 p.m. and giving a special Christmas package from Golden Gulf Limousine and Treasure Bay Casino and Hotel. Columbus returns home to face Fayetteville on Thursday.
